Social Responsibility

Being 'Responsible' is part of our school's code of conduct.  We aim to empower children to become kind, safe and responsible citizens in our constantly changing world, both locally and further afield.

Social responsibility is fully embedded in our teaching, both inside and outside the classroom throughout the whole school.  Children learn to value different perspectives, embrace inclusion, understand the importance of sustainability and the wider environment, as well as the importance of giving back to society more than you take.

Here is a glimpse of how we do this:

Helping care for ourselves and others

Personal wellbeing is at the core of the Hamilton Primary School's ethos, and we promote a sense of belonging and feeling valued throughout everything we do. Children care for each other by providing a listening ear to their peers or serving as friendly faces to anyone feeling lonely.  Our children also experience how to care for new life through our curriculum opportunities.

Helping support other children

Our Year 5 pupils take on the role of prefects in the school.  They help support the staff and children on a daily basis. We also have children who are part of the school council, who work on behalf of their peers to improve the school offer and environment.

Caring for our environment

We are committed to nurturing environmentally conscious and sustainable thinkers. This is spearheaded by our Eco-Warriors. Throughout the school, children are actively taught how recycling is part of day to day lives, and pupils also take part in litter picking throughout the local community.  We also have an allotment plot that we visit weekly with classes, where they are taught about sustainability and growing your own food.

Giving back through the School Council

Children from across the school work together in a democracy to do good for others, supporting many charities voted by the School Council.  Recently the Council supported The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance service.  The council is active each half-term and the children are voted on by their peers after having to make a speech as to why they should be chosen.

Giving back to local society

Each year our children choose a local charity to support via a school council vote. We also work closely with our local church to raise money for their chosen charity during our Nativity and Carol Services.  At harvest time we collect food for our local food bank, which is hosted by the Salvation Army, and we also visit our 'Sheltered Housing' once a year to provide a musical experience for the residents.

Giving back to global society

Each year the school council and the Eco-Warriors consider how we can positively impact the wider world, and we discuss the small changes that we can make at school and home to support the wider world. This is also taught through our PSHE curriculum.

Understanding different cultures and perspectives

Awareness and appreciation of different cultures throughout the world are embedded in our Geography, PSHE, RE and Music curriculums.  We have had cultural heritage days, opportunities for families to come to school to talk about their faith and we are also a 'No Outsiders' School.

Understanding global issues

Inside the classroom we ensure that all of our children understand fundamental human rights and societal and environmental issues that impact the global population.
